The University of Minnesota Duluth men’s hockey team played much better against the sixth-ranked Minnesota Gophers, but they still didn’t win and ended the weekend without a win after losing the series finale 5-1.
They beat UMD in all three games for the first time since the 2011-2012 season.
Minnesota got ahead 2-0 in the first period thanks to goals from Brodie Ziemer and Connor Kurth.
In the last four seconds of the game, Bulldog guard Owen Gallatin scored a goal that beat the Gophers’ goalie. This cut the Bears’ lead to one goal. The only goal scored by UMD that night was set up by captain Dominic James and Joey Pierce, who is from Hermantown.
Star forward Jimmy Snuggerud scored on starting goalie Adam Gajan to make it 3-1 for the Gophers in the middle of the second.
With six minutes left, Minnesota scored on the power play to make it 4-1. Then, Matthew Wood scored into an empty net to end the game.
Over the course of the two games, the Gophers scored 12 more goals than UMD and had 34 more shots than UMD in the final game.
In the loss, freshman goalie Adam Gajan made 30 saves, which was his second straight start in a back-to-back.
